Today I’m gonna be a little political correct (nowadays in Sweden it’s almost the same as being a decent human being) and also make a deviation from my regular policy to mostly promote unknown artist. Since today is International woman’s day I would like to highlight my three favorite female songwriters and artists. For some reason they are all Swedish, but most of all they make great music. I don’t think they need that much introduction so I let a short story about my relationship to respective song and the music speak for it self.
First of is a song from 2005. As a young boy I had a little crush on Robyn but I didn’t like her music, it was way to mainstream for me. And when she released her self produced album I wasn’t excited at all. But what a sensation it was. And this single, “Be Mine!” cut through to all kinds listeners, from the mainstream radio zombies to dedicated music fans. For me personally it was one of the songs that formed the soundtrack of my last days of senior high school, one of the best times of my life with a lot of fun and not so much responsibility.
Next up is the multifaceted artist Laleh who writes in Swedish, English and Farsi. I’ve been listening to her music since her first album but the song that made the biggest impact on me was “Bjurö klubb” a really catchy pop song. This gem came out at the same time I met my to-become wife which gives it a lot of positive connotations for me.
Speaking of positive connotations. This last song came out in 2013 just when me and my wife had bought or apartment together and was on the edge of going on a three month backpacking adventure in South America. I had been listening to a lot of Veronica Maggio‘s singles but this album really struck me down when it came. One of the best Swedish albums of all time. And this song is a really sweet love declaration to her son and a worthy conclusion for this day.
So that’s all for today. And if you think this was way to political correct… good for you, now get a life!
