With just a few weeks left of what has been maybe the most fun and most comprehensive year in my life I feel it’s time to summarize it a bit. I wont focus to much on my own music, instead lift the music I have discovered during the year. I will do a summarizing of my own year in another post.
My favorite songs of 2017
Never in my life have I discovered more music than I did this year, and most of it are independent and totally unknown to the regular radio listener. But damn there’s some good music outside the main stream. Thanks to all the independent radio stations, blogs and networking platforms that have allowed me to find such amazing music. I wont mention all the places I have to thank here, instead I have a list of great blogs and radio stations on my page “Tips for independent artists” that I can really recommend.
So here you go. First out is place 11-50 without ranking and then I will write a little bit about every song on top 10. To make it a little easier I will post a Spotify-playlist and one on Deezer with all the songs on it, but if you like what you hear, make sure to look them up on Facebook, Twitter, Bandcamp etc and show your support. The links for all artists leads to their Facebook-page.

10. Almost Honey – Sweetest Thing
From Stockholm, Sweden comes this female electronica duo. I actually got to know one of them earlier this year when we attended the same online course, and I got to meet them and see them live this summer.
9. Izzy Fin – Are You In Love
I’m totally in love with this song from the amazingly talented British singer-songwriter. And she’s a great person as well and I got the great honor to actually preform this song live with her in Brighton this summer.
8. Wire in the Wood – Yla Yla
The music is best described as psych-folk and this instrumental master piece also has some jazzy undertones that I totally love. My favorite instrumental song for 2017.
7. Shaun Doyle – Passing Shadows
Even though I’m not religious my self I can’t avoid to fall completely for this christian singer-songwriter and this song is both soothing and suggestive.
6. Graham Marshall – The Last Line
One of the first friends I made in the independent scene and this song was love at first sight. Kind of lo-fi acoustic folk and a voice full of emotion. And when he sings I can actually understand his Scottish accent.
5. Juxta – The Beautiful Ones
Mr. Juxta is not only a great guy and the creator of the networking community Atom Collector Records. He’s also the front man of post-punk project Juxta and the arrangement of this gem is to die for.
4. Elizsabeth – Clarity
With a voice of an angel and a feeling for melodies that people would offer their right hand for this piano driven shows that this girl has a bright future in front of her.
3. My Dear Wendy – Don’t Know Who You Are
Speaking of amazing voices. I actually got to now the artist behind the name and when I told her she reminded me a lot of Regina Spector she got really happy. And even if there’s similarities, she has a really unique expression.
2. Big Brutus – Louise
I actually got to know Sean thanks to his manager Ari and I will forever owe her for that. Next year I think he’ll be big enough to be disqualified for this list. So I take my chance to put this fantastic indie folk song as my number two 2017.
DRUM ROLL…. DRUM ROLL…. DRUM ROLL
Jon Magnusson’s favorite song of 2017 is…..
1. The Undertakers Office – Broken
From the deep Norwegian woods comes Lars and Knut who forms this great electronica duo with some obvious folk influences. The mix of guitars and electronic beats are totally mind blowing and I’ve been drifting away to this song more than once this year. I really hope I will get to meet this guys in a not to distant future to jam, and maybe down a few beers.
There’s a lot of good songs that didn’t make it to top 50. The competition was really though. So therefore I wanna mention some other artists and bands that has made a big impact on me. Especially there’s some electronic music of the kind I would never have listened to before and that really has challenged and developed my way of thinking of music, among them Leg Puppy, Simon Irvine, Jayber.C, Bzur and Newenx. And then there’s all the people in #MonsterThread and all the others music maker I’ve been interacting with during the year, no one mentioned nobody forgotten, but you all are amazing.
I’m really looking forward to 2018 and to discover even more amazing independent music. So turn off your main stream radio and discover what the music scene has to give.
